Russia rejects joining NASA's Artemis moon program in favor of China

Russia, being a senior partner with the United States in the ISS, would be a natural for Artemis. However, it looks like Russia, in an apparent fit of pique, has decided to include itself out of the effort to return to the moon. According to Ars Technica, Russian space chief Dmitry Rogozin was quite caustic about the idea of Russia joining the Artemis Coalition, describing the U.S.’s mission to get back to the moon as a “political project,” and one that resembles NATO.

House appropriators extend middle finger to NASA's 2024 moon landing goal

"The Trump administration proposed in its budget submission for NASA for FY 2021 that $4.7 billion be allocated to exploration research and development (R&D), including the Human Landing System (HLS). The numbers were designed to assure that NASA could return astronauts to the moon by 2024."

"However, the House Appropriators were pleased to disagree. The subcommittee that funds NASA marked up a bill that allocated $1.56 billion for exploration R&D. That means that the HLS would get just over $600 million for the next fiscal year, inadequate for achieving a 2024 moon landing."

NASA, China and the UAE are scheduled to send missions to Mars in July

Starting in July the window opens when missions to Mars can be easily sent across the interplanetary gulf. If all goes well, three such missions, mounted by NASA, China and the United Arab Emirates, will depart Earth for the Red Planet. The number of missions, who is launching them and their complexity illustrate the importance Mars has for purveyors of space exploration policy.
