Hillary Clinton calls for Australia-style gun confiscation, calls it a 'buyback'
When President Obama called for the politicization of the latest mass shooting in Oregon as a way to press for “common sense gun safety laws” he mentioned, in passing, Australia as an example of a country that has accomplished that thing. Friday, Hillary Clinton cited Australia’s “buyback” program as something that should be looked into. What neither politician mentioned, but what Hot Air did, was that Australia confiscated privately owned firearms, only providing compensation to sweeten the deal.
NASA returns images of two frozen worlds, Enceladus and Pluto
This past week, NASA provide a look at two frozen worlds far out into the solar system. Thursday, Cassini, currently orbiting Saturn, flew by the frozen moon Enceladus and provided the closest views yet of its north pole. Friday, New Horizons, hurtling deep into the Kuiper belt at the edge of the solar system, returned a fresh image of the icy region of Pluto known as the Sputnik Planum.

China looks to deep space missions, including more lunar landings and robot ants
China has already landed a rover on the moon and has launched numerous crewed space missions in low-Earth orbit. It is looking ahead to building a space station and landing more probes on the moon, including the lunar farside. According to a Thursday story in Xinhua, the Chinese are already looking beyond to deep space missions to destinations including the moon, Mars, and asteroids. The idea is that China will not be a respected space power until it starts accomplishing things in space that no other country has done before.

With the proliferation of knife attacks on Jews by young Palestinians which, as the Wall Street Journal suggests, has resulted from blood lust American Secretary of State John Kerry tried to assert that the stabbings were caused by the growth of settlements on the West Bank, a statement that many saw as an attempt to blame the victim. According to a Thursday story in the Washington Examiner, Sen. Ted Cruz. R-Texas, a candidate for president, called on Kerry to resign. This demand caused eyes to roll both in the White House and at Foggy Bottom.

Jeb Bush believes that Newt Gingrich's moon base idea was 'pretty cool'
During the 2012 Republican primaries, then candidate Newt Gingrich proposed building a moon base by the year 2020. Unfortunately, his main rival for the GOP nomination, Mitt Romney, descended upon the idea like a wolf on the fold, heaping ridicule upon it. The proposal was even the subject of a Saturday Night Live skit. The moon base and soon after that Gingrich’s candidacy sunk out of sight. But, according to a Wednesday story on CNN, former Florida governor, and current presidential candidate Jeb Bush was not laughing. In fact, he still thinks that the idea of a moon base is “pretty cool.”

Calhoun, a 19th Century politician, suggested that states could “nullify” federal laws, in his case tariffs. Calhoun was the spiritual godfather of the Confederacy. Davis is the Kentucky county clerk who believes she can opt out of issuing same-sex marriage licenses out of respect for her religious beliefs. San Francisco and hundreds of other so-called “sanctuary cities” believe that federal immigration laws do not apply to them.

MIT study proves that a return to the moon necessary for NASA's Journey to Mars
Back in July, a private study, funded by NASA, suggested that a lunar base could be established relatively cheaply using a commercial approach to returning to the moon. The lunar base, using a reusable lander, would deliver 200 tons of fuel to a refueling station each year. Thursday, Mars Daily reported on a study released by researchers from MIT that showed mathematically how stopping by such a lunar supplied refueling station would be the best approach for a sustained program to explore Mars. Roughly 68 percent of the mass of each mission would be saved by not having to take fuel all the way from Earth.

Has the Kepler Space Telescope discovered an alien civilization?
The Kepler Space Telescope observed light coming from tens of thousands of stars during its operational life. The Kepler ascertained the existence of hundreds of exoplanets by measuring periodic dips in the brightness of certain stars that indicate planets orbiting them. The Atlantic published a story on Tuesday about one such star, KIC 8462852, about 1,500 light-years from Earth. The fluctuations of light output from that star suggest that something odd is present in that distant solar system. Some are whispering that the something odd are alien artifacts.

The question of who “won” Tuesday night’s debate of the Democratic presidential candidates will likely be sorted out by the polls in the next few days. However, the consensus of the media and political insiders was that Hillary Clinton won the debate, according to Politico. However, RealClearPolitics noted that a Frank Luntz focus group of Democratic voters gave the victory to Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont. A case can be made for both assessments.

The United States and Israel sign space cooperation agreement
According to a Tuesday story in Arutz Sheva, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and Israel Space Agency Director General Menachem Kidron signed an agreement to further future space cooperation between the two countries. The agreement took place at the International Astronautical Conference taking place in Jerusalem. The agreement restores a previous commitment for space cooperation between the two countries that lapsed in 2005. The current agreement will have a far greater scope than the previous one.

Is Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT really a socialist? The Washington Post reported on Monday that he said so, on "Meet the Press." He was asked whether he was a capitalist and responded, “No, I am a democratic socialist." The Post noted that with this statement, Sanders likely doomed whatever small chance he had to become president. 50 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of capitalism while just 30 percent have a similar view of socialism. 61 percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of socialism.

Why NASA's Charles Bolden thinks space cooperation with China is inevitable
According to a Monday story in Reuters, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden told the International Astronautical Congress meeting in Israel that the current ban on space cooperation with China is “temporary.” The ban has been in place since 2011 as a result of that country’s human rights abuses, its aggression against its neighbors in the South China Sea and the East China Sea, and its campaign of cyber espionage against the United States. Bolden’s reasoning did not involve Beijing changing its policy in any of these areas. He suggested that the United States will have no choice but to cooperate with China in space.

Recently, NASA rejected Lockheed Martin’s bid for a contract for the Commercial Resupply Services 2 (CRS-2) program as being too expensive. CRS-2 is the follow-on to the current CRS program that has SpaceX and Orbital Systems sending supplies to the International Space Station. Sunday, Motley Fool explained why the aerospace giant was left behind and denied a share of what might be $14 billion between 2018 and 2024. In essence, Lockheed Martin tried to get the space agency to pay for a spacecraft that would do far more than just take cargo to and from the International Space Station.

President Barack Obama sat down for an interview that aired Sunday on 60 minutes, according to Fox News. In short order, the conversation turned to Vladimir Putin’s intervention in Syria with the goal of propping up the regime of Bashir Assad. The vigorous military campaign that involves aerial bombing of anti-Assad rebels and the introduction of Iranian ground troops has been contrasted with Obama’s disastrous attempt to arm and train local militias to fight against ISIS. Obama made an extraordinary observation as to why he is still the better leader than Putin. The matter lies in where one’s priorities are.

Debbie Wasserman-Schultz says Republicans want to 'kick women' out of the USA
DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz is given to saying alarming things whenever a TV camera is present. RealClearPolitics reported Sunday that she said a doozy on CNN’s “State of the Union” while inveighing against Donald Trump and the rest of the Republican presidential candidates. She said, “Look, between the fifteen Republican candidates who are left, all of whom are trying to out-Trump Donald Trump by saying, ‘Yeah let's kick women. Let's kick them and immigrants out of this country. Let's take away health care from women.’ The implications of the Republican presidential candidates, including Carly Fiorina, wanting to kick women out of the United States was left unevaluated.
